Amy’s story

Amy came to natural contraception the same way many women do – through dissatisfaction with the side effects of hormonal contraception. After going on a progestin-only birth control pill three months after giving birth to her daughter in 2005, her milk supply increased to the point of nearly sabotaging her breastfeeding relationship with her daughter. No doctors, nurses or breastfeeding consultants told her about this possible side effect, but Amy later discovered from her own online research that it’s common. After learning about the Justisse method of fertility management from her sister Kim, she’s been hooked on eco-contraception ever since and now counsels other women (and their partners) on Justisse.

New motherhood also brought an increasing awareness of environmental concerns as Amy began trying to make the most healthful choices for body and earth when it came to diapers, sippy cups, body products and more. Amy believes that fertility awareness naturally brings women into a relationship of deeper respect for their bodies and for mother earth by honouring the cyclic nature of our bodies and seeing it echoed in the cyclic nature of the seasons and the moon. As a mother, Amy feels an even greater responsibility to leave the earth in the best possible condition for her children and future generations.

Kim’s story

Kim became interested in environmentally friendly sexuality products after launching Red Tent Sisters in 2007. In the weeks prior to opening the store, Kim opened seemingly endless boxes of vibrators. The nauseating smell of some of the toys got her rather concerned. Considering she likes to test products prior to putting them on the shelf (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!), she wondered what exactly she was putting in her body. Research uncovered the little known and dirty secret that the sex toy industry is unregulated, meaning companies can put almost anything into a product, including phthalates (the cause of the unpleasant smell and the chemicals linked to serious health issues). Kim quickly became diligent about carrying only body-friendly products at Red Tent Sisters, which proved more difficult than she originally thought. Many toy companies claim to be using body-safe materials, but when you look more closely, they contain parabens, petrochemicals and other harmful ingredients. Kim works hard to find companies that genuinely care about making products that are healthy for you, and the planet. Because, after all, good karma in your toy means good karma in the bedroom.

Kim’s speaking topics:

  • health and environmental dangers of phthalates, parabens, and other endocrine disrupters
  • eco-friendly sex toys and products
  • eco-friendly contraception
  • environmentally- and health-conscious menstrual products and practices
